& 123 do not mention defense. Sirah Al-Hajj 22:39 . gives
permission to fight when attacked and when driven out. Surah
Al-Baqarah 2:191 repeats the call to fight those who drove you out
but the footnote in the Hilali/Khan translation makes
matters fully clear. Surah Al-Imran 3:140 teaches that fighting
is to test believers and take martyrs.

Corpus Quran https://corpus.quran.com/ is affiliated with a British university, it breaks down the Qur'an word by word with a dictionary and concordance. Read 9:29 above, thern read this.
Hilali, one of the Quran translators also translated Sahih Bukhari and included many Qur'an quotes in it. Read them and obtain clues.
Challenge: go to sunnah.com and try to find 2914 in Bukhari. You will only find the Arabic, there is no translation. Why? Go to quranx.com and search for "shade of my spear" You will only find it in Ibn Kathir's Tafsir, you will not find it in the hadith collections because they have been expurgated. Muslims do not want us to know that Muhammad made his living by force of arms.
It is argued that Jihad is morally superior because Islamic law prohibits killing noncombatants. But why does it prohibit killing women and children? Why does it prohibit embezzlement of the spoils? Could the two be related? Read the relevant hadith collected by Imam Muslim. Read the TOC slowly and meditate on each topic.

Reliance is not the only codification of shari'ah. Hedaya is the code of the Hanafi school used in India and the Ottoman Empire. War must be carried on at all times. Islam's canonical books show that jihad is war, "holy fighting in Allah's cause" involving killing and being killed, acruing spoils if successful and admission to Paradise killed. It is murderous and destructive and it is how Muhammad got his income. 9:29 was revealed with jizya as a replacement for revenue lost by prohibition of pagan hajj.
